Phonics - Little Wandle Letters and Sounds
The Letters and Sounds Phonics approach has been evaluated by the DFE and most schools are now replacing this structure with a DFE validated approach. We have decided to use the Little Wandle scheme as it uses the skills and abilities already within the school with a rigorous approach that incorporates the development of reading throughout the scheme. Please see the link below for information on how the scheme works (many of the linked videos can be found on the Parents Page below)
Parents Presentation - Little Wandle
Little Wandle has a page for parents with demonstration videos on how the sounds are pronounced as well as exemplars of how we teach the lessons and information on books coming home.
Some of the downloadable resources are below too.
Phonics Based Reading Scheme
We adopted in 2020 the Big Cat reading scheme at a cost of £3500 to support the development of phonics as the main way pupils learn to read in the early years. The newer Little Wandle Phonics Scheme uses a slightly adapted book order from the Big Cat Scheme for their reading development and the school has invested a further £3000. In school the children will have a matched book from the Little Wandle Scheme which they will read three times. They will then receive either the same book, or as near as possible a matched Big Cat scheme book, to read with parents at home. Over the coming year we will be adding to our book resources to ensure we can provide exactly the same reading book for all children as they have read in school.
The Big Cat progression can be found in the link below but please note as the scheme grows we will be adding further Little Wandle titles. Pupils move on from this to a core Oxford Reading Tree and Book Band system to provide breadth and depth.
